Praise For Mardi Gras Party Revellers

Now that Sydney's biggest GLBT party weekend is over police and para medics from the emergency department can reflect on the weekend.

With an obvious reduction of police at the entrance of the Mardi Gras Party this year,  tension for many party goers was relaxed, certainly their would be less panic in taking happy pills prior to entering which was the case last year.

I'm not going to promote drug taking as this is not what the story is about, but isn't it interesting that with less police putting fear into party goers their is a reduced number of incidents.   

It was reported that drug-related incidents failed to mar festivities over the Mardi Gras weekend, and emergency department doctors called it the best year ever.

Police arrested just five people for possession of ecstasy or cannabis throughout the weekend operation, less than half the drug-related arrests over the previous five years. Only one man was charged with supply.

St Vincent’s Emergency Department director Gordian Fulde said fewer arrests and hospital admissions indicated people were out to have fun without being stupid.

“It’s the best Mardi Gras, from an emergency department point of view, I’ve ever experienced by a long shot,” Dr Fulde said.

“The main fallout on the Saturday was basically bystanders who were drinking too much and fell over. There was very little that was attributable to the participants of the Mardi Gras and drug taking.”

With few problems arising during the Harbour Party the previous weekend, Fulde said the signs of problem-free Mardi Gras were already present.

“It’s been going down generally. Usually even the weekend before Mardi Gras, we have a lot of international visitors who want to party,” he said.

“We just didn’t have the same fallout this year that we had last year.”

Madonna inducted into " Rock and Roll Hall of Fame"

Pop star Madonna, folk singer Leonard Cohen, rocker John Mellencamp, British pop band The Dave Clark Five and instrumental group The Ventures were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame today.    

The five artists were chosen by 600 music industry professionals, and beat out disco queen Donna Summer, funk group Chic, rap pioneer Afrika Bambaataa and hip-hop group The Beastie Boys for the 23rd annual induction.

Our final Party - Homesexual

Two hours sleep after ToyBox we were off to our 5th party in 8 days, Homesexual, at Home nightclub.  The party was a sellout as the previous 3 were also, yet it was uncomfortably crowded.  We waited till 4am for the guest DJ Offer Nissam to appear, we left in less than hour.

I must admit we were not into his style at all, so dissapointed were we, we promised never to go to Homesexual after Mardi Gras again.

Each to their own I guess..

ToyBox Delivers

After 3 hours sleep from the Mardi Gras After Party it was time to get ready for the next one.

ToyBox has over the past few years been the best dance party that I have ever experienced. Having waited 1 year with the problems of last years party and the disappointment of the cancellation of the Luminere Party six months ago we were uncertain what to expect.

Congratulations to the ToyBox team you delivered an incredible party with amazing music fantastic laser light shows and a finale seen below that was breathtaking.

The finale shown above featured a drag queen raised into the air, her dress then opened and spread out covering the entire dance floor, once released it flowed over the party goers disappearing as confetti bombs exploded above covering everyone with colored paper.

We are sold on ToyBox parties, we love them, and can only look forward to the next one!

Mardi Gras Party

I know it was over a week ago but you may not have seen some of these images of Australia's largest GLBT event - Sydney"s Mardi Gras Party.

Although I did take my  with me I was quickly in no shape to take photographs, so these images are credited to Anne-Marie Calilhana.

During the 10 hour Party the RHI Pavilion played host to a number of musical gay icons such as Olivia Newton John, Carlotta with David Campbell performed with over 40 drag queens while Cyndi Lauper closed the party with her hit "Girls just want to have fun".

Images of my Partner and I have been appearing on a number of websites!

We spent half of the evening in the Horden pavillion, some the best laser displays were seen here, we unfortunately missed the laser man though.

What a great party, I must say though that this was a 30th..... where was the big bang at the end, I strongly believe a finale like that seen at Toybox Parties should have been incorporated to leave patrons smiling.

What an Experience

What an Experience!

This was a 5 year dream to walk proudly up Oxford Street flying the rainbow flag wearing my uniform.  

As I commenced  walking along Elizabeth St and turned up Oxford St my emotions started to take over, I shed a tear or two.

The most incredible moment of the parade was when I saw my closest friend Bruce who was a marshall, I ran to him and gave him a hug and kiss, I then sighted my partner who was against the fence taking photo's.  To be able to embrace with your partner on Oxford St in front of so many people was an amazing feeling.

I had only watched the parade and marshaled prior to this year.  It is very hard to describe the adrenaline that you get.  Walking up Oxford St with 350,000 people watching, screaming, and cheering has to be experienced.

30th Mardi Gras in Sydney

On Saturday I was fortunate to join 10,000 others in marching in the 30th annual GLBT Mardi Gras.  Armed with my camera I captured these images prior to joining the fire brigade entry.

Floats in Elizabeth St prepare for the 3 km trip up Oxford St 

This year the procession was led by American Comedian Margaret Cho along with Redfern couple Shane Brennan and Craig Gee- partners who were bashed while holding hands in Surry Hills late last year.

This year there was more than 150 floats which included defence force personnel, surf life savers, and the original 1978ers were arrested by police after a protest march was held on international Gay Solidarity Day to commemorate the Stonewall Riots in the United States.
